Week 4: Abigail
Read: 1 Samuel 25

So many women have experienced the pain and embarrassment of living in a dysfunctional relationship. Abigail was married to someone whom the Bible described as crude and mean. Even his servants called him wicked and a person nobody could talk to. When Nabal had the opportunity to return kindness to David and his men, he selfishly and rudely refused.

David, who appears to be hot-tempered in the situation, immediately wants to take justice into his own hands. However, in her gentleness and wisdom, Abigail persuades him otherwise. Abigail had learned to cope with her situation but did not allow her husband’s behavior to cause harm to her family. Her brave response spared the lives of her household, and her wisdom and gentleness also spared David from sinful bloodshed.

Abigail responded bravely and wisely to her husband Nabal’s wrongdoing. In what ways do you think Abigail was wise? What factors contributed to the resolution of the crisis?

Prayer:

Lord, we pray today for women living in precarious situations. Give them the boldness to stand up against destructive behavior with the same wisdom and grace that Abigail carried. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
