On the last Sunday of March, as the congregants of First Oneida Baptist were preparing to worship, they received word that their church building was on fire. Thankfully, the fire was contained to one area of the basement and there was no structural damage to the building.

At the time of this report, the damage from the smoke and water was still being determined and a big cleanup and rebuild effort was underway. On April 7, our executive director, Helena Bergen, had the opportunity to tour the church and have an onsite visit with Shirley Gleadall who pastors the church with her husband Brian.

Helena also met Nichole Doxtator and her mother, Teresa while she was there. Both women are deeply invested members of the church and have a vibrant ministry within their community. Helena learned from them how the church kitchen is the hub of much of what they do, and how the damages there will impact future ministry.

Since then, we’ve been in touch with Shirley, Nichole and Teresa as they’ve determined ways in which Baptist Women can help them to revitalize and resume their Oneida kitchen ministry. Click here to learn more and to donate by June 2!
